When Basketball Meets Theatre

When Basketball Meets Theatre

Imagine the intensity of a basketball game combined with a generous dose of impressive trick-shots and a dollop of humour. That’s precisely what you will get courtside from a game by the Harlem Globetrotters, an exhibition basketball team which originated on the south side of Chicago, Illinois, in the 1920s. For the team’s forward Dragon Taylor, receiving the call to join the Harlem Globetrotters was a dream come true. “I never thought that in a million years that I would be able to be with an iconic brand like the Harlem Globetrotters,” says Dragon, who is now in his sixth season.

The 30-year-old has always been athletic, having grew up playing both basketball and football. Dragon’s father is a track athlete, and Dragon himself successfully made his first slam-dunk when he was 13. The decision to focus on basketball came when he discovered he was much better at it than football. “I have a 45-inch (more than a metre) vertical jump and I am able to show that every game night,” lets in Dragon, who counts the legendary Michael Jordan as his hero.

Although there are plenty of job perks, the best part of being a Harlem Globetrotter for Dragon is being able to travel the world and put a smile on people’s faces at each tour stop. He says, “Sometimes you never know what someone is going through in their personal life, but one thing I do know for sure is that when you come to a Harlem Globetrotters’ game, we will bring joy, happiness, and memories that will last a lifetime.”
