Video gaming used to be purely recreational. Today, professional gamers are international celebrities who compete in global tournaments for huge cash prizes. The emergence of pro gaming has created a huge industry, along with numerous jobs and career pathways.
According to Goldman Sachs, the global revenue of the esports industry is expected to reach $3 billion by 2022.
In Singapore, the Singapore Cybersports & Online Gaming Association (SCOGA) is helping guide young adults in achieving their esports dreams. SCOGA’s Esports Academy, which is supported by the National Youth Council, aims to build developmental pathways and provide opportunities for youths to become esports athletes, coaches, managers, professionals and leaders of tomorrow.
Esports Academy Incubator
Created to extend SCOGA’s dedication to engaging, educating and enabling youths through the medium of esports, SCOGA’s Esports Academy Incubator consists of three main tracks of training.
The first is the High-Performance Track (HP), which focuses on the development of an individual’s or a team’s esports performance. The Media and Operations Track (MO) is the second track, which imparts essential technical knowledge on producing a full esports event. The third is the Social Service Track (SS), which trains Youth Befrienders in engaging the youth community and promoting esports at the grassroots level.
Curriculum
The Esports Academy Incubator curriculum focuses on skills training and practice, and is led by esports industry professionals. Lessons include simulated activities that involve team discussions, theory application and execution that encourage critical thinking and communication. Incubatees also get to apply the theory to real world settings, and develop and analyse theories and strategies.
These interactive lessons are complemented by on-the-job training and incubatee-led projects. After which, the incubatees get to showcase what they have learnt to SCOGA partners and potential hirers.
The Esports Academy Incubator is intended for youths from the ages of 16 to 35, who want to work in the esports industry. Over a period of several months, incubatees attend at least 3 hours worth of lessons a week in well-equipped facilities.

A spread of skills and knowhow is needed by this rapidly growing industry.

Benefits
Incubatees will learn about the esports scene in Singapore, the opportunities arising from its global popularity, and the various career options within the industry. They will gain valuable industry experience, and pick up skills relevant to not just esports, but to the digital economy as a whole.
Esports, just like conventional sports, requires its competitors to possess broad experience and a variety of skills, such as sharp hand-eye coordination, tactical foresight, the ability to work as a team, and effective troubleshooting under pressure. The Incubator curriculum is designed to help gamers cultivate and hone these competencies, among many other lifelong skills.
